As WXYZ Channel 7 reported, the Michigan Attorney General's Office announced on Thursday that it will not file criminal charges against Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office deputies involved in the fatal January shooting of thirty-four-year-old John Jenuwine in Ypsilanti. Investigators concluded the deputies reasonably feared for their lives after a police chase when they believed Jenuwine was armed with a gun following a van crash, though no weapon was found inside the vehicle.

Attorney General Dana Nessel's office stated the deputies were legally justified in using deadly force. The decision prompted sharp criticism from attorneys Maura Battersby and Todd Flood, who represent Jenuwine's family. Flood told WXYZ Channel 7 that the ruling is "insanely wrong," while the legal team confirmed they will continue pursuing a civil lawsuit against the sheriff's office.

Washtenaw County Sheriff Alyshia Dyer released a statement on Friday noting that the sheriff's office will conduct its own administrative review of the incident. Dyer previously called any officer-involved loss of life devastating after releasing dash camera footage from the pursuit in January. Meanwhile, the family's civil litigation remains active.
